Re: [IP] diabetes and cholesterol

The NIH recently announced new standards for
controlling cholesterol, including use of anti-
cholesterol medication. Basically, they want to
get much more aggressive about treating anybody
who has a higher risk of developing heart disease,
even if they don't have it yet. Having diabetes
and elevated cholesterol would definitely put a
person in that category.

My understanding is that part of the reason for
these new standards is that a class of drugs
called statins have been shown to be effective
not only in lowering cholesterol, but preventing
heart attacks and deaths from heart attacks.

See www.nhlbi.nih.gov/new/press/01-05-15.htm
for more information. (For some reason, in this
press release, they only talk about the heart
attack risk for people with type 2.)
