Interesting study from Diabetes, Vol 46, April, 1999, pages 745-753.
The title was "Gene Transfer to Human Pancreatic Endocrine Cells Using
Viral Vectors."

It seems that the adenovirus, the name of a fairly ordinary "causing
cold-like virus," will attach to a gene that could correct diabetes
and go right into the beta cell where insulin is made.

It has great pictures if you want to look at the virus inside the
cell. What really is great is that this can be the biologic arrow to
the beta cell carrying the gene that could reverse diabetes. What a
