Insulin does not cross the placenta, but glucose does.  If Mom' BGs are high,
baby will produce its own insulin to deal with the high BG...and grow bigger.
Also, after delivery, baby is still producing excess insulin , thus is at risk
for hypoglycemia.  Ketones will cross placenta and cause problems for baby.
