That sounds like what I do currently.  I don't count carbs at all, I just
look at a meal and think of it in terms of how many units, not really
thinking about the number of carbs, but thinking about what has a meal like
this done to my blood sugars in the past and what how many units I took to
cover it successfully.....Doesn't always work perfectly but seems to work
way better for me than the bolus wizard.  I may have to try tweaking some
of the settings.
