RE: [IP] staying home alone

Its okay to be protective!!!! But don't over do it!
Maybe give him a little freedom at a time. Go to the grocery store or up to
the corner drug store.....just for a half hour or 15 minutes.

I am 27, I have been diabetic since the age of 6!!! I am now a mother too!!!

I agree 10 is TOO young for an evening home alone, but 10-15 minutes will be
good. Have your cell phone on....check his blood before leaving!!!

I was a latchkey kid since around the age of 9 or so, I also have a brother
who is diabetic. We had no choice after school to be home alone for at least
an hour before mom came home. I did fine. I was responsible about my blood
sugars......he will be fine. It will also give him some independence and
also time to realize that HE needs to take care of himself too!!!

Good luck!!!!!

does anyone know the age of a latchkey? I believe 10 is way too young and
given
the diabetes, I would wonder if the parent could be arrested for abuse of
not
properly watching their children.

only 10 years old so I know that I can't leave him alone. This however has
me thinking...at what age is it ok to leave a diabetic child alone at home
to care for himself. I have never thought of EVER leaving him alone but the
older he gets, he wants to be more independent and wants to be able to take
care of himself. I would be scared to death to leave him alone for fear of
something happening. What do i do when he is 13 or 14, do I still leave him
in
the care of a sitter? He is good at handleing his health but you never know
when something might happen.
