It is an issue of aging and the guarantee of sterility. The infusion sets
are manufactured and sealed into a porus container. The pore size is small
enough so that bacteria are unable to get through because they are too
large. The package is then place in a poison gas environment to kill
"everything" that is in the package. Testing has shown that his guarantees
the sterility of the contents of the package for a fairly long time. The
expiration date corresponds to a conservative view of what the minimum
time (+saftey factor) is that the contents will remain sterile.
