ketones happen in all humans (DM or not) when they start burning fat for 
fuel. Some diets (from the 70's) had you measure with a ketone strip to 
make sure you were making ketones. Probably not the healthiest way to 
diet.. If you don't have over abundant glucose in  your blood and have 
enough insulin but are not getting nourishment, you can get ketones. It's 
part of the starvation process.
