[IP] requirements for becoming a CDE - long

Here is what the 2001 CDE certification handbook says.
(I am going to be a CDE some day too (notice I didn't
say 'might be' - I'm determined.) ;) PS...I was told
that the CDE certification exam is heavily weighted
towards type 2.

To qualify for the certification exam the following
requirements must be met:

1. Professional education
A. An active, unrestricted license from the US or its
territories as a registered nurse, occupational
therapist, pharmacist, physical therapist, physician,
physician assistant, podiatrist, or registristration
as a dietitian by the Commission on Dietetic

B. A minimum of a master's degree, from a US college
university accredited by a nationally recognized
regional accrediting body, in one of the following
areas*: nutrition, social work, clinical psychology,
exercise physiology, health education, or specified
areas of study in public health.**
Note: individuals who meet both A and B must apply
under A, current license or registration.
*official transcripts must be submitted with the
application for the certification examination
**advanced degrees in public health must be in an area
of concentration specific to health education, health
promotion, health and social behavior, or health
communication. A degree in any other track or
concentration, including administration, health
policy, epidemiology, biostatistics, or population
studies, is not accepted. To verify the program of
study specific
to the acceptable areas of concentration, an official
transcript that indicates a master's degree was
awarded and the area of concentration must be
submitted with the application for the certification

2. Professional practical experience
AFTER meeting the education requirement and BEFORE
applying for the certification examination, ALL of the
following requirements must be met:
A. A MINIMUM of two years (to the day) of professional
practical experience in diabetes self-management
education -in health care settings- within the US or
its territories*

- Only experience occurring AFTER completing the
professional education requirement may be counted
toward this requirement

B. A minimum of 1000 hours of diabetes self-management
education experience within the past five years*
-work experience is defined as employment in diabetes
education for compensation
-all experience must be in health care settings within
the US or its territories

Current employment in a primary role as a diabetes
educator a minimum of four hours per week, or its
equivalent, at the time of application

3. Application
Submit a completed current application for the
certification examination for diabetes educators,
along with the required fee, by the application
deadline date

*all professional practice experience requirements
must be met at the time of application

The following are examples of experiences which are
considered diabetes education and thus may not be
counted toward meeting eligibility requirements (this
is not an exhaustive list):
*routine occupational duties (eg routine nursing care,
routine nutrition counseling, routine pharmacy
*providing continuing education to professionals (eg
teaching nurses, physicians)
*supervising and managing other professionals
*volunteer activities
*experiences as part of an education/training program
