The function of the parathyroid glands is to keep blood calcium levels
normal.  A decrease in blood calcium levels will stimulate the parathyroid
gland to release PTH (parathyroid hormome).  This causes more dietary
calcium to be absorbed and it also releases calcium from bones.  Too much
PTH can result in bone problems.

<The parathyroid is a small gland that is <next to (and posterior to, IIRC)
<the thyroid.  It gets its name because of its <location, not its function
<(which I don't recall at this moment).
