[IP] Re: Low blood sugars and ketones???

Yes! This comes up frequently on the CWD list because the
children get ill, don't eat, etc, and have low bgs and ketones.
It can happen without illness as well, if you are not eating
enough carbs because the body turns to the fat stores for energy.
Ketones are produced as acids, leading to a decrease in blood
buffers (bicarbonate.) Kussmaul breathing (rapid, shallow
breating which expels acetone via the lungs) *partly* remedies
this problem. Any time you have a large enough buildup of ketones
in the blood it will eventually make the blood acidic (acidosis)
and make you feel pretty sick (though it would not be DKA if the
bg is low, obviously.) But low bgs can sometimes be present with
acidosis, that is why any time you are ill, whether the bg is
low, normal, or high, you should check for ketones.
Hope this helps!
