I am sure it was a typo...
The author meant 86 deg F (30 deg C).

I don't happen to have an insert handy, so I can't verify this....  are 
you sure it says 860 degrees farenheit??!?  I don't it's even 
possible for me to generate that kind of heat on my *stove*.
