Re: [IP] Any Celiacs on IP Pumpers?

There are a few kids on the CWD list with Celiac. From what I
understand, Celiac is an autoimmune disease of the intestines
caused by a sensitivity to gluten (a protein in rye, wheat, oats,
and barley.) The lining of the intestines lose the little folds
(villi) - which is where the nutrition is absorbed - as well as
the digestive enzymes, so it causes malapsorption problems. It is
often seen in children and causes weight loss and failure to
grow/thrive. It can cause symptoms of bloating, anemia, and
diarrhea. People with Celiac have to follow a special gluten-free
diet. After a period of time on this diet the villi, etc will
return to normal and regain their ability to absorb. Since it is
an autoimmune disease it is often seen with other autoimmune
diseases, one of which is diabetes. The interesting thing about
that is that there are some families where one child has D and
another has Celiac (or asthma, or some other autoimmune disease.)
