Same thing happened with my daughter (now 9 1/2, dx'd at age 6.)
She had a bout with the flu that sent her into DKA, and that's
when the big D diagnosis was made. Her A1C at diagnosis was 23%
(which they ran twice because they thought it was a mistake) -
they said she had obviously been losing pancreatic function for
some time prior but the flu is what tipped the scales.
