The CDC criteria  is for infection control. This is an absolute for IV
catheters as a maximum time for a catheter to stay in place. This does not
mean any catheter shouldn't be removed and a new one put in another place
before the 3 days are up. A more important issue here is good cleaning of the
site before insertion, attention to the old site if it looks red and also
hurts. An equally, or more, important issue is BG control. If the BGs are not
right, and the site bothers you...change it.
