[IP] Basal rates

Hi group,

I'm still having fun trying to set basal rates (pumping for a month).
My big problem is in the morning from 7 to 12 or 1. I've done 5
breakfast fasts with 5 different results!
1) basal rate 0.5 the whole day
                            8:30 am 142 (breakfast fast)
                           10:00 147
                          11:30 166
                          12:30 pm 181

2) basal rate midnight to 8 am 0.5
                    8 am to noon 0.7
                    noon to 5 pm 0.4
                     5 pm to midnight 0.6

                    7:30 am 128
                    9:30 166
                    12:00 noon 189
5 more readings from 1-5 pm all 188-194 (wow!! great
consistency in the afternoon!)

fasted bkfst and lunch this day (no food from
midnight before until 5 pm)

3) same basal as 2)
                    8:00 am 125
                    9:30 am 197 (ended fast)

4) same basal as 2)
                    8:30 am 159
                    9:30 am 145
10:15 am 145 (great so far!)
                    11:39 am 187 (ugh!!)
12:04 am 217 (bolused and ended fast)

5) new basal rate: midnight to 7 am 0.5
                            7-10 am 0.8
                            10-12 pm 0.7
                            12-5 pm 0.4
                            5-midnight 0.6

                    7:30 am 149
                    9:00 am 155 (great!)
                    10:26 am 198 (ugh!)
                    12:38 pm 222
1:34 pm 197 (bolused and ended fast)

What is confusing about all these readings is, why the sudden jump in
blood sugars, at different times?! (anywhere from 9:30 to 12:30!!) And
all this when I had absolutely no food since midnight the night before!

So I'm contemplating a new basal rate of the following:
            midnight to 7:00 am 0.5
            7 to 11 am 1.0
            11 to 12 noon 0.7
            12 to 5 pm 0.4
            5 pm to midnight 0.6

Sorry for all the details (I have an appt to see the pump specialist
2/24, but thought I could fine-tune before then!). Do you think the new
basal rate makes sense? (I'm on humalog, 47 year old male...) Do any
other folks have such a higher basal rate at only one time in the day?
This makes no sense to me. I know of the pre-dawn phenomenon, but this
is the pre-noon phenomenon! (I do tend to stay up late--at least til
1:00 a.m., and sleep in til 7:30 or 8:30 if I can). One other fact: my
4:00 am readings were generally very good--not doing them at the moment
(need sleep!)

For any analytical types out there, I'd be interested in your thoughts.
I thought the basal rates would be easy to set...

Thanks.

Todd
