If you learned the old exchange system, as i did, it may help to try thinking
in
exchanges. Carbs are easily derived from exchanges if you wish, or the minimed
bolus calculator can actually be set up so you tell it carbs in exchanges, not
carb grams, if you prefer to do it that way.

One other thing i found helped a lot is to spend a bit of time mentally carb
counting any food item you can find that comes with a printed nutritional
chart.
Estimate it first, then read the chart. After a while, you'll get an idea of
the numbers.

And keep in mind that a gram is a pretty small amount. An ounce, for example,
is 28 grams (though an ounce of food does not contain, automatically, 28 grams
of carbs) The point is that you don't need to be dead on accurate to the last
gram when estimating.

And the other thing you may find useful is to keep a mental link to what you
did
before. Chances are, if you used multiple injections, you kinda knew how much
insulin to take for a given meal, right? So keep that in the back of your head.
The results of your carb counting efforts should come out in the same ballpark
as what experience taught you worked with injections. Use that as a cross check
to know when you're on the right track.

Good luck

Peter
