Re: [IP] donating organs AND blood

RGS Leppanen made an incorrect blanket statement:
"One can NOT donate plasma, if he or she is type 1 or
2 on insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents (to donate
plasma while a diabetic one can not be on any diabetes
medications)"

I emphatically reply: YOU ARE WRONG. I have been
Type 1 (i.e. ON INSULIN) for 32 years. I donate
PLASMA regularly. Please verify your information
before making a statement like that!!!!

The bottom line is: If a diabetic wants to donate
***something*** CALL THE ORGAN/BLOOD/BONE BANK in your
area and talk to the HEAD OF COMPLIANCE (or whatever
they call the person in charge of setting & verifying
their donor rules). DO NOT accept the answer given by
the person answering the customer service phone line -
they often do not know and are not savvy enough to
open the "rule book" and read through the if, then,
else statements (that's why their job is answering the
phone, not MAKING the rules).

So - please do not hesitate to donate. Please do not
accept as the truth anything you read here (including
my statements). Do YOUR homework and get YOUR answers
from YOUR provider (be it your MD, blood bank, or
savings & loan). Every municipality and state and
country have different regulations.

Good luck to whomever asked the original question
about donating. And for those of you that AREN'T
donating - WHY AREN'T YOU????????
