I don't know if I am late coming to this thread.  There is a brief
article in today's (12/1) Los Angeles Times Health Section concerning the
positive effect of buckwheat - lowering blood sugar levels 12 - 19% (of
course, this is among rats).  Apparently this is from a University of
Manitoba study, and goes on to state the operative chemical is
chiro-inositol; for those with more interest, the report appears in the
December 3 Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.  Parenthetically,
the author of the article in the paper refers to buckwheat as a grain.
