"The biggest illusion about communication is that it has been accomplished"
George Bernard Shaw
We have a lot to talk about. George Vaillant, a psychiatrist from Harvard
Medical School, suggests that coping well, using "mature defense mechanisms"
helps people live and age successfully: altruism; sublimation (being able to
postpone gratification); sublimation (using creativity to cope with pain and
anxiety); humor; and anticipation.
He suggests working on the "immature defenses: projection (blaming others);
dissociation (not looking at negative feelings and thoughts); fantasy
(excessive); hypochondria; and acting out. (Choosing to behave in
self-destructive ways rather than thinking through a situation.)
We can all find ourselves in both categories at times; it might do all of us
some good to take an honest assessment and learn some new behaviors.
Meanwhile: Exercise, breathe deeply, have mental health and rest days, sleep
well, laugh, cross off things on your "to do" list that are not necessary,
give hugs and hold hands.
We are also lucky to have one of our "own", Colleen Rossano, a terrific
person and professional, come and talk about her work with diabetes:
I work for Access Diabetic Supply, which is a DME and Pharmacy. We carry a
full line of products and bill the insurance directly. So it makes ordering
your diabetic supplies hassle free. I am the Community Liaison, Diabetic
Educator and Insulin Pump Specialist. I have been living life with diabetes
for 24 years and take pride in the fact that I can help others in their daily
quest of diabetes.
Be in touch with Dr. Wendy Satin Rapaport- 561 4778595- the facilitator of
the group- if you have any questions.
