    Kim actually that isn't quite true...If I remember correctly a person
actually has 2 genes...one for the diabetes (which everyone has) and the gene
that triggers the diabetes gene.
    It usually takes something traumatic to trigger that second gene...and it
does not necessarily have to be an illness...in my case it was the onset of
puberty that triggered my gene...

  Yes, everyone with Type I had a virus that triggered the disease, but not
  necessarily the flu. It can be any virus. Sometimes we have viruses that are
  very mild and my not even notice it. There are many kinds of viruses.
