Re: [IP] Re: IP] vitectomy

Have had a vitrectomy in each eye -- one in '89, one in '90. Went into each
operation with a good deal of trepidation, becase the retina specialist who
performed the operations warned me that there was only about a 50/50 chance
that vision would improve. Was worth the risk in my cases, however, 'cause I
basically had NO vision in each eye. Now I'm 20/30 in one eye, 20/50 in the
other. Will admit freely and to anyone who asks that I was indeed very
fortunate with the outcomes. But the retinal bleeding just would not stop,
and I really had no other options.
The operations themselves are pretty serious -- invasive surgery in the eye,
removal of the vitreous jelly and appropriate laser. The recovery took a
couple of weeks, with the usual heavy doses of anti-infectant eyedrops. I
had my surgeries early in the morning and then spent a miserable 24 hours in
the hospital each time. In fact, that first 24 hours was the wordst part of
the entire experience!
