[IP] Re: insulin-pumpers-digest V4 #730

Pregnancy and diabetes. Gestational Diabetes a type of diabetes that occurs
for the first time in one's life during pregnancy.98% of the time, it is gone
once baby is delivered. Approx. 5% of women develop gest. diab. It is a'
problem of severe insulin resistance that occurs in the 3rd trimester of
pregnancy and is related to hormones produced during pregnancy, those
hormones making one very insulin resistant. The following factors increase
risk;over 35 yrs of age, family history of diabetes, and overweight (really
over FAT) when got pregnant. All women need to be screened between 24 and 28
week of pregnancy; screening is simply drinking glucose solution and having
blood checked. Tune in later for treatment of GDM. Priscilla Schell RN,CDE
