[IP] Re: Decision to have children

They check lung maturity via amnio to determine if it's safe to
deliver the baby. This is usually done for babies who are nearing
term but not quite there yet who need to be delivered STAT due to
one reason or another (severe toxemia, HELLP syndrome, etc.) They
also check before scheduling csecs - which are usually done
before 40wks (and sometimes before scheduled pre-40wk
inductions.) If the amnio shows they aren't developed enough yet
they give a series of steroid shots (over a period of a few days)
to the mother to help mature the baby's lungs very quickly.
