RE: [IP] Re: insulin-pumpers-digest V3 #722

I am on a saline run right now and will start insulin on Monday. I strongly
recommend waiting until you have met with your CDE and discussed all of the
factors that will attribute to what your rates will be started at. Although
there are several books out there that will give you equations based on
weight and total amount of insulin you are taking now, it will really be
based also on your activity and insulin needs at different times in the day.
These equations won't tell you if you need more in the morning because of a
dawn phen., or if you less at another time of day. I am sure most the
people on this list don't fit exactly into that equation either. I
understand your impatience on starting as I have had to wait a while myself.
I have had my pump a whole month without being able to start. :( But I have
also been trying to get it since March. Best of luck,

Hi Kathy,

I was wondering if you could give me any information on how to get started
on an
insulin pump? You know, basal rates, boluses, accomodations for highs,
etc... I'm supposed to see an educator in one or two weeks to start on a
run, but I'm itching to get started very, very, soon. Can you help?
