After my husband and I lost our jobs, we lost all our
insurance. Neither of us were eligible for COBRA since his company
went out of business and my company was too small to qualify. At
that time, we were able to get an individual policy from BCBSM called
a "continuation" policy. It was for people like us who had
previously had coverage with BCBSM through their jobs and had lost
their jobs and insurance. My premium is quite low, but my coverage
is also very limited. We have no coverage for doctors' visits, DME,
or prescriptions. Luckily, because Michigan passed the Diabetes Cost
Reduction Act back in the early 2000s, my diabetes supplies are all
covered under a category called, "diabetes supplies" rather than
prescription or DME. We have a $1,000/$2000 deductible and a 30%
co-pay. We've had this coverage for two years now and I'm wondering
how much longer it's going to last since they certainly must be
losing money on me. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop when
they tell me my policy is no longer available and my premium will
jump up 500% to be more in line with the individual policies they
show on their website now for people our ages. Then we more than
likely will become uninsured since we won't be able to afford to pay
more than half our income for an insurance premium, and in Michigan
there are no other options for people like us.
