Re: [IP] Endo giving me hard time over my choice of pumps
Fire the witch! GRRRRrrrr it just makes me mad everytime I read a story like
yours where a doc is pushing one pump to the detriment of all others. It is your
CHOICE! It is your disease. You have to live with both 24/7.
When my original doc and I talked pumps he said go home and do some research
and come back and tell me what you want. I did. At that time it was MM and
Disetronic - Animas was just barely releasing their first pump. I didn't want to
go with them cuz they were so new (and after learning more I didn't like all the
screens you had to scroll through and the smaller insulin capacity but I think
they have proved their worthiness many timesover since - this was 2000).
When I saw my doc I said i want this pump because of A,B,C.. he said fine and
signed the paperwork - it wasn't the one he had previously worked with (he was
an internist with a keen interest in diabetes and heart disease) so he called
the rep and got an info packet, learned about it, and met with the rep as well.
My training was done at the hospitals diabetes care center by their CDE's with
my doc checking in.
We very much had a partnership - I haven't quite found that in any docs since
(I moved in late 2001) but I hold that doc/patient relationship up as one of the
best. We worked as a team. I read a diabetes book that talked about the patient
being the captain of the treating team which included endo, eye, poditrist,
dietician etc.. I keep that model in mind. A doc that doesn't respect my brain
is NOT the doc for me..and shouldn't be the doc for you either.
Good luck in finding a new doc who will listen.. give you time and work with
you. And we are all here.
