I can't speak for others, but I believe that DM doesn't necessarily mean
that moms have a harder time with pregnancy.  Yes when pregnant one must
test often and always monitor BS but I think we do that anyway.  My son is
14 months now and I had a normal pregnancy except for the fact that I was
put on bedrest at 7 months because of pregnancy induced hypertension and the
fact that I was on my feet for 6 hours a day.  I did have an emergency
c-section (again not related to DM) and was out of the hospital in 4 days.
My doctor was a stickler about work with the c-section though and would not
let me return for 8 weeks. (Which was nice having the extra time with the
