Medtronic alleges patent infringement

Published August 7, 2003
Medtronic Inc. of Fridley has accused London-based Smiths Medical of
infringing two U.S. patents for insulin pumps combined with blood-sugar

Medtronic MiniMed Inc. claims in a federal lawsuit filed Tuesday in Delaware
that Smiths and its St. Paul-based Deltec unit are selling pumps under the
Cozmo brand that use Medtronic inventions patented in 1997 and this year.

The lawsuit intensifies the companies' rivalry over the estimated $5 billion
annual market for diabetes-monitoring gear. Last month, Medtronic said it won
FDA approval to sell "the world's first 'intelligent' insulin pump and glucose
monitor system." In June, Deltec introduced "the first all-in-one smart
insulin pump and blood-glucose monitoring system" for diabetes management,
it expected FDA approval in early 2004.
