[IP] Licorice

Before we all get terribly excited about the effects of licorice (good 
OR bad) let us take a moment to remember that in the United States 
nearly all the "licorice" candy (with molasses, corn syrup, sugar or 
that dreadful artificial sweetener) is made with ANISE flavoring and not 
licorice root.  It is the REAL licorice that interacts with ACE 
inhibitors, aids digestion and has blood-sugar-lowering effects; anise 
seems to have none of those qualities--it just tastes very similar.
