RE: [IP] Child Pumper Crisis: Sneaking Food

Hi, I was diagnosed just days after my 6th birthday. I snuck food whenever
I had the chance. There were no pumps back then and all testing was done
with urine strips. Maybe your daughter is angry at all the restrictions
placed on her. Or maybe she truly does not understand what diabetes is. I
remember when I was told, I believed that I was going to die, just like it
sounds. I could read off the definition in textbook terms, but I didn't
understand what any of it meant. Just because your daughter sees more
positive role models than I did does not mean she necessarily gets it. Any
child going on a pump or even having been just diagnosed is likely to be
angry and confused. Big words, lotsa new stuff, restrictions, etc. And
really, she is just being a kid. Kids eat. And kids hide things. Try carb
counting and bolusing. It may take a longer while to get your basal rates
just right, but do you really need all of your answers right now? I know
how important good control is, but she may not. Take it easy and don't give
up hope. This too shall pass.

Karen
