How long did you go when it was originally diagnosed?  It was discovered
by the ancient Romans (or Greeks?) because of the sweet urine (yum), and
they attempted to treat it then.  Before insulin it was a death sentence
that would depend on how well they could avoid eating, for how long they
would last (iirc).  One of the advantages for T1 is that we deteriorate
quickly, and seek treatment.  T2's can go for long periods before being
diagnosed, causing damage all along.
