"Gastroenteritis" is an infection of the intestines; usually by a virus.
It presents with diarrhea, not constipation, mostly.  Sometimes you have
crampy stomach pain and nausea as well.  It's very irritating, but resolves
in about 7-10 days or less.  If its source is bacterial or protazoal, which
the doc should figure out for you, you might need an antibiotic for a few
days.  It all depends on the situation.
