RE: [IP] pig transplants?

Many research groups are also working on islet only transplants. While this
does not eliminate the issue about lack of available pancreas for
transplantation, it may reduce the amount of immunosuppressive drug the
patient has to take or the hope is to eventually eliminate the need for it.
One group is trying a new drug type with transplant and experimenting with
supplemental infusion of stem cells or antibody producing white cell
precursors in an effort to achieve this goal. The transplantation of islets
only is done as a stand alone procedure and doesn't only happen when the
patient needs a kidney or other organ transplanted as well. The first islet
only transplant was done in Miami in Sept. of 98. Check out the website
www.drinet.org for further information on this revolutionary research.
