mine was noticed when i had a severe low (pre-pump) and the emts noticed it 
and commented on it.      the drivers wife has asthema and he wondered if 
he'd be able to get one for her.       like your son, i never was crazy about 
any medical ID i'd seen, this i'm extremely comfortable with.    my daughter 
mentioned emt's being trained to look at your wrist - maybe since they're 
taking your pulse?    and this is noticeable, but not obvious.     i really 
think you and your son would be happy with it!
