Thanks for the suggestions!  Yes, he has the operator's manual.  I am
starting to wonder if the Minilink is expired.  We only used it for 3 months
 but it has sat for six months, and the battery got clear run down.  I
learned that the warranty is six months, so it's now out of warranty.  :(
I'll go over tonight and call MM helpline and have them walk me through
testing it.  Wish us luck.
