SpectTx gets FDA OK for new insulin infusion patch set
April 16, 2002 08:32:00 AM ET
NORCROSS, Ga., April 16 (Reuters) - Diabetes products maker SpectRx Inc. (<A
SPRX</A>) said on Tuesday it had received U.S. Food and Drug Administration
approval to market a new less painful insulin infusion patch set. The five
micro needles in the infusion set, for use with all major brands of insulin
pumps, are much smaller than ordinary insulin pump infusion needles, and that
reduces the pain associated with the procedure, SpectRx said. Insulin
infusion sets, when attached to external pumps, provide a steady stream of
insulin for people with diabetes, who do not have enough of the hormone
insulin to regulate sugar levels in the blood. SpectRx expects the new
infusion patch to be on the market in 2003. The company estimated U.S.
insulin pump infusion set disposable market at $200 million and said the
market is growing by about 25 percent every year. Shares of SpectRx closed at
$4.99 in Monday Nasdaq trade, at the lower end of one-year range of $4.46 to
$9.21. REUTERS ) 2002 Reuters
