    I recently read Michael Bliss's book "The Discovery of Insulin" - 
fascinating story of how, like many discoveries, this one was attributable to 
"serendipity". The "standard of care" was basically starvation: i.e. patients 
were limited to about 700 calories per day & were literally skin & bones. The 
"before & after" photos in this book are astounding!
