Bypass Best For Diabetics 
For diabetics, bypass beats angioplasty for unclogging arteries.  That's
the finding of a new report published in the Journal of the American
College of Cardiology, which found that diabetic heart patients who had
bypass surgery had a 20 percent higher survival rate than those who had
balloon angioplasty procedures.  Researchers from the University of
Pittsburgh followed up on the results of the Bypass Angioplasty
Revascularization Investigation, a study begun in 1987 involving 1,829
people, 353 of whom were diabetics, who were randomly assigned to have
either bypass surgery or angioplasty. Five years later, the BARI study
found that, overall, patient survival rates were similar for both
treatments.  But among the diabetic patients, the rate of survival was much
higher for those who had bypass surgery than for those who had an
angioplasty. The Pittsburgh researchers continued to follow the BARI study
participants for another two years.  They found that the seven-year
