Many people acquire Type 1 after having had chicken pox or coxsakie virus, 
and a few other things that re-arrange the antibodies in your immune system. 
Seems the antibodies to fight off some of these viruses do not recognise the 
beta cells making insulin and then attack them. This started out as a theory, 
and when outbreaks ( or clusters) of new diagnoses appeared, health records 
showed exposure to the viruses.  You need to have a certain type of immune 
system for this to happen. There are many who recovered from Chicken Pox who 
have never developed Type 1.
