Renal disease is a GOOD reason to go on the pump. I have one patient who was 
on pump while getting dialysis, and she managed to do OK. She has a new 
kidney now. She went to Europe for a month approximatly 6 weeks after 
transplant, and did fine. Having the pump made BG control easier with the 
anti-rejection drugs needed after transplant. Pumping Insulin book also notes 
renal disease as a reason for pump therapy.
