A Newsletter from Dr. Joe Prendergast

Nearly 12,000 pancreas transplants have been done. More than 1200 in
1997. Graft success ranged from 82% at one year and 72% at three
years. Most of the time when this procedure is done it is because the
kidneys have failed and a combined kidney and pancreas transplant is
done. Glucose goes to normal and the complications remain stable or
improve. Cost for surgery is between $60,000 -$80,000 and $5,000 -
$10,000 yearly for immunosuppressive drugs.
