Dive Flag Camp DAVI
Scuba Diving with Diabetes
August 1-8, 2001

Camp DAVI
(Diabetes Association of the Virgin Islands) for adults with Diabetes 17 and up is located in St. John, Virgin Islands. Camp DAVI is the first adventure camp to incorporate SCUBA diving along with hiking, running, sailing, windsurfing, sea kayaking, and snorkeling for adults young and old with Diabetes. With all the activities done at the camp, good blood glucose control is imperative. Participants usually end up doing 12-15 blood tests per day for each person. In doing this, participants learn that knowing what their blood sugar is, and where it is going, can give them the freedom to SCUBA dive and participate in other physical activities safely. Without this knowledge they could not otherwise safely take part in many of the activities. In the evenings the camp offers education, support, and discussions. Camp DAVI staff includes site Dr. Doren Fredrickson from the Kansas University School of Medicine, and camp director Stephen Prosterman, Diving and Field supervisor for the University of the Virgin Islands.

The dates of the camp this year are from August 1-8. The cost for the week is just $900 including food, lodging and all gear. SCUBA certification during the camp can be aranged for an additional $275. I will only accept a maximum of only 15 persons in order to keep the quality of instruction and safety at a premium but it seems that we usually are able to accomadate most requests.

As we all know we can do anything we want to, we just need to just keep at if we really want it and take care of our Diabetes correctly.

Happy and safe diving and adventuring to you.

Sincerely,
Steve P.
